University challenge

November 4, 2015

About 1,000 students packed two conference halls via a video link to attend a talk given by Kevin on Tue evening. The event took place at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing where Kevin graduated more than 30 years ago. He talked about how he persisted with English as an undergraduate, his time at BBC World Service and the recent state visit to the UK by the President of China. It was one and half hour of extraordinary stories punctuated by laughter and applauses from the audience at regular intervals. Prior to the talk, articles and photos of Kevin in action during the state visit went viral on social media in China. At one point, ‘Queen’s interpreter’ ranked sixth in the top ten search terms on the biggest microblog site in China, registering 150,000 searches.

Royal etiquette

October 23, 2015

KL Interpreters provided a total of 40 interpreter days of service during the state visit to the UK by the President of China. Six of our interpreters worked at the State Banquet at Buckingham Palace. Apart from Kevin, this was the first time for them to work on a royal occasion and to be inside the Palace. The unrivalled expertise in the company was in full play. Internal training ensured that every member of our team knew what to expect, how to conduct oneself and the correct terms to use when addressing members of the royal family and staff of the household. Among the many challenges was one to buy suitable evening wear. Not the least because staff had no time for shopping. The company did the research, sent links to staff who went into the shop to buy and go.
