Training for a Chinese Delegation

June 15, 2016

A group of five Chinese managers received specialist training over two days at our office. They came to London for a UK-China summit event. The custom-developed course covered a range of specialist expertise required for high-profile events. Our Managing Director Kevin Lin and Staff Interpreter Fion Yang showcased a suite of KLI capabilities that are not available in interpreter training in China. They include high-level professional standards, smooth delivery in consecutive interpreting, projecting voice for a large audience as well as English etiquette. As part of the course the Chinese managers also visited the China Britain Business Council, had fish and chips for lunch, paid a visit to a local pub and practised eating spaghetti and rack of lamb with knife and fork. They will be putting their newly acquired skills into practice at the upcoming summit event.

Cannes Film Festival

May 10, 2016

KL Interpreters will be at the 69th Cannes Film Festival from the 11th to 22nd May, 2016. Our team aims to add sparkle to a series of events with Chinese participation. We already have an impressive track record in the creative and entertainment sector. We’ve interpreted for China Central Television (CCTV), the British Museum, Animation Festival, London Fashion Week and Royal Ascot. KLI’s participation at this year’s Cannes Film Festival will add one more high-profile event to our list. It’s been forty years since “A Touch of Zen” won an award at Cannes and since then sixteen Chinese films have been recognized.

90th Birthday

April 21, 2016

I’m delighted to see on the TV The Queen enjoying her birthday celebrations.

The first time I interpreted for Her Majesty was in Oct 1999. The President of China was visiting London. Sitting behind her, I remember thinking to myself “I hope I’ll still be able to walk, let alone work at that age”.

The Queen was 73 that year. She’s still doing amazingly well.

One week in London is the top prize sponsored by KL Interpreters for the Cross Straight Interpreting Contest. The winner this year is Yuechen Wang, a final year undergraduate from Beijing. More than 2,000 students from 210 universities across mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and the US entered the contest, now in its sixth year. It took six months for the 20 strong finalists to emerge. They were put through their paces in front of a panel of judges and a live audience of several hundred. We have been sponsoring the top prize since its inception. The finals of the contest are held in mainland China and Taiwan alternately.

‘KL Interpreters are never late’ is the first lesson for students of MA Business Interpreting Chinese and English, University of Surrey. They are at our company for a week of work experience. One of the students was told off for being late on the first day! The week is modelled on the KLI staff induction. It consists of presentations about the company, ethical standards and confidentiality, case studies and preparation for a simulated assignment. The MA Business Interpreting Chinese and English course, now in its fifth year, is a collaborative programme between Surrey and KLI. The Guildford-based university is a UK top ten across all ranking tables.
